Stagnant Water and Lead in School Pipes Are a Health Risk To Children

Christina Liu @ Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 3:18 pm -0400
All across the country, students, teachers, staff, and administrators are preparing to return to school, getting ready for the start of a new school year. Many school buildings were not used over the summer, meaning that the water in the buildings' pipes have been sitting stagnant for nearly two months. The CDC has developed recommendations for steps to take when reopening buildings after an extended shutdown or low-use period. This is also an issue that Purdue University has been researching. Here is how lead in water could impact schools in your area.

Contaminants of concern in Fairfax County’s drinking water include LeadPFASDisinfection ByproductsRadiumUraniumArsenic, and Chromium 6For Hydroviv’s assessment of drinking water issues in the Fairfax County, Virginia area, we aggregated water quality test data from Fairfax Water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Environmental Working Group, and the US Geological Survey. Our Water Nerds then cross referenced these data with toxicity studies in the scientific and medical literature, as well as upcoming regulatory changes. The custom water filters that we build for our customers in the Fairfax County area are optimized with this research in mind.

New York Passes Bill To Reduce Lead In School Drinking Water

The New York State Legislature recently passed a bill to help make drinking water in schools safer. National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) reported that this bill lowers the Action Level of lead detected at school drinking water taps from the current EPA Action Level of 15 parts per billion (ppb) down to 5 ppb, which is the bottled water lead concentration limit set by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The EPA, CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) all recognize that there is no safe level of lead for children. However, the 5 ppb Action Level is much closer to the recommended lead level recommended by the AAP of 1 ppb, so it is a major step forward in helping New York school children access safer drinking water in schools.

Drinking Water Supplies Risk Contamination from Toxic Wastewater Ponds

The leaking phosphogypsum waste pond that nearly collapsed recently in Florida once again shines a spotlight on the dangers and near-disasters posed by wastewater ponds throughout the country and their impacts on drinking water. These toxic waste ponds are not only created from phosphate mining, but used at power plants (coal ash) and large-scale agricultural facilities (such as manure from hog farming).
