Beat the Heat: 5 Top Hydration Strategies for Summer

RSS

With summer just around the corner and temperatures rising, lots of us are spending more time outdoors for work and fun activities. It's important to stay hydrated! Here are some tips to help you stay cool and refreshed all summer long.

1. Hydrate before you start spending time outside. Drinking water and electrolyte drinks before going outside can help your body stay hydrated while spending time in the heat.

2.  Make sure you take the time to drink water regularly when you are outside. When you are spending time in the heat, the recommendation is to drink one cup (8 ounces) of water every 15-20 minutes.

3.  Drinking too much water can also be dangerous. NIOSH and OSHA recommend that people working outdoors should consume no more than 48 ounces (about 1.42 L) of water per hour or 48 cups in 24 hours. Please note that these guidelines should apply to everyone spending time outside in the heat, not only if you are working.

4.  Don’t wait until you feel thirsty, because by the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.

5. Check with your doctor, particularly in the summer, if you have any health conditions that may impact your hydration needs, as some of these health conditions will dictate the amount of water you should be drinking under different circumstances.

Finally, here’s what Hydroviv’s WaterNerds do before heading outside for summertime activities: We fill reusable water bottles with filtered tap water and bring them along. This not only helps keep us hydrated but also benefits the environment by reducing plastic waste. In fact, by using and refilling a reusable water bottle, each American can save at least 156 water bottles from entering the landfill each year!
